Reader was probably right but was could have been a little more tactful in delivering bad news. Actual quote: "He and you don’t have a future for a relationship - it’s time to make peace with that." Personally, I prefer readers who are a bit more gentle with my feelings, but if you're looking for the blunt, honest truth I'd say go for it.
