One central place where information arrives, decisions are made and instructions are sent to the rest of the body. The octopus challenges that idea. Its nervous system is organised very differently from our own. A substantial proportion of its neurons are distributed throughout its eight arms, where extensive neural circuitry processes sensory information and participates in controlling extraordinarily complex movement. The result is not eight completely independent brains, as popular descriptions sometimes suggest. It is something considerably more interesting. The octopus possesses a highly distributed nervous system in which central and peripheral processing work together. Each arm contains an axial nerve cord extending alongside hundreds of suckers. Within this remarkable system, sensory information can be processed locally while information is also exchanged with the central brain. Recent anatomical research has revealed hundreds of repeating ganglia along the arms, providing further insight into how this extraordinary peripheral nervous system is organised. This allows an animal with no rigid skeleton in its arms to bend, twist, reach, grasp, investigate and manipulate its surroundings with astonishing precision. But movement is only part of the story. The suckers themselves are sophisticated sensory structures. Scientists have identified specialised chemotactile receptors within octopus suckers that allow the animal to detect certain chemicals through physical contact. The effect has sometimes been described as tasting by touch. When an octopus explores a rock, shell, crevice or potential prey with its suckers, it is not simply feeling the shape of what is there. Touch is providing chemical information as well. The animal is discovering its environment through interaction with it. And that creates today's metaphysical correspondence. Human beings often believe understanding should arrive before experience. We want to know whether the relationship will work before allowing ourselves to become vulnerable. We want certainty about a decision before making it. We want to understand another person without moving close enough to encounter who they actually are. We want to know whether a new direction is right before taking the first meaningful step towards it. But some information cannot be obtained from a distance. It exists inside the encounter. The octopus does not need a complete map of everything surrounding it before it begins exploring. It gathers information through exploration. That is not recklessness. It is another form of intelligence. There is also an important distinction between knowing nothing and not knowing everything. Those two states are easily confused. Uncertainty can make us believe we have insufficient information to move at all, when in reality we may already know enough to take one intelligent step. That step produces information. The information changes our understanding. Our understanding changes the next step. Intelligence therefore becomes a process rather than a possession. The octopus also offers another remarkable lesson through the extraordinary flexibility of its body. Without rigid bones controlling the possible shapes of its arms, it can alter its form continuously as circumstances change. There is wisdom in that flexibility. Sometimes the problem is not that we have chosen the wrong destination. We have simply become too rigid about the way we believe we must reach it. A plan can change without the purpose changing. An opinion can evolve without making the previous version foolish. New information can alter a decision without invalidating the intelligence that produced the original one. Flexibility is not the opposite of conviction. Sometimes flexibility is evidence that intelligence is still operating. September 10 arrives at the darkest edge of the lunar cycle, immediately before the New Moon. Almost all visible lunar illumination has disappeared. Symbolically, this creates an extraordinary environment for today's message. Very little can be seen. Yet very little being visible does not mean that nothing is happening. The lunar cycle continues whether we can see its reflected light or not. Perhaps human understanding sometimes works the same way. There are periods when we cannot yet see the complete shape of what is developing. We may have fragments. Sensations. Observations. Experiences. Instincts.
